A motorcyclist who nearly tripled the speed limit was told he could have been thrown in jail if someone was hurt during his “outrageous” offending.
Michael Zahra pleaded guilty in the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h following an incident at Taylors Hill, in Melbourne’s west last year.
The court heard that on November 15 about 7.50pm Zahra was seen travelling at a fast speed on a grey Kawasaki motorcycle along Gourlay Rd, Taylors Hill.
The 30-year-old was then clocked on a speed detector near Woodbury Ave where he accelerated to 148km/h in a 60 zone.
That evening, he was intercepted by police and asked why he was travelling at that speed but had no reason.
The motorbike was impounded for 30 days.
Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg said the offender had travelled at an “outrageous speed” and he was “lucky” the police informant had not charged him further with reckless or careless driving.
“If they had, you could have faced a jail sentence, if there was an accident and someone suffered serious injury or they were killed you would be imprisoned and the period would not be for weeks it would be measured in years,” Mr Rozencwajg said.
Zahra, who told the court he drove a truck for a plumbing company, said he had no excuse for the “reckless” conduct but assured the Magistrate he no longer rode in that way.
He was fined $1000, his licence was cancelled and he was disqualified from driving for 18 months.
