Victoria police hunt train stabbing suspect

A man remains on the run after he allegedly stabbed and assaulted passengers in two terrifying incidents on public transport in Melbourne’s west.

Transit police are appealing for help to identify the man, who is believed to have boarded a Sunbury-bound train about 9.15pm on Friday, July 9.

Police believe the man was travelling between Footscray and Sunshine railway stations and abused others in the carriage before two passengers stepped in.

The man then allegedly produced a sharp object and stabbed a 33-year-old man twice.

He got off at Sunshine station and fled the scene, while the stabbing victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Prior to the train ride, investigators believe the man assaulted two people in separate incidents in West Footscray.

He is believed to have punched a man at a supermarket in Barkly St about 8.45pm, before he boarded a bus five minutes later, assaulted a passenger, and then escaped via the back exit.

Police have released images and CCTV footage of a man they believe will be able to assist with their inquiries.

The July 9 incident is the second stabbing to occur near Sunshine railway station this month.

A Deer Park man was stabbed on Station Place near the station just after midnight on July 7.

Any witnesses or anyone with information can phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
