What to do if you think a child is being abused

A concreter has been jailed for sexually abusing two girls on more than six occasions while he was babysitting them.

Stephen Millington, 43, was sentenced to a lengthy jail term after he was found guilty of two charges of committing an indecent act and five charges of sexual penetration of a child under the age of 16 in the County Court on Tuesday.

The court heard Millington, from Melton, sexually abused two girls on multiple occasions in the early 2000s.

The abuse occurred over a six-year period when one girl was aged between four and eight years old and the other was aged between five and ten years old.

On one occasion, Millington was at the victim’s home sitting on a beanbag, covered by a blanket, when he put his hands down her nappy and sexually touched her.

He also assaulted one victim when they shared a bed overnight.

To continue to abuse the children, Millington threatened one victim to not tell anyone because if she did “they would both be in trouble and everyone would hate her”.

Millington, who now has several children of his own, was aged between 18 and 24 years old at the time of the offending.

Both victims gave evidence during Millington’s trial and shared the devastating impact it had had on them.

One woman said she looked up to and trusted Millington and said she struggled to trust any man due to his offending.

“Not a single day goes by where I have not thought about the abuse,” she said.

“I will never know who I was supposed to be.

“I will always remember what happened and that is torture.”

How do juries decide a verdict?

Judge George Georgiou said Millington’s crimes were a “significant betrayal” of the trust of the victims and their parents.

“You took full advantage of their trust and generosity for your own sexual gratification,” he said.

Judge Georgiou also said Millington had shown “no remorse or contrition” for the offending.

He sentenced Millington to nine years and nine months in prison with a non parole period of six years and six months.

Millington will also be on the sex offenders registry for life.
