A soccer fan has caught the train to the A-League derby clash so he could booze on with a mate, only to be busted drink-driving home from Wyndham Vale station.

James Bolton told the Werribee Magistrates’ Court he took the train from Wyndham Vale to see Melbourne City play Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park in December last year and after downing “six or seven” beers decided against leaving his car in the station carpark.

Bolton was picked-up more than three times the legal alcohol limit at a booze bus site in Cocoroc just after midnight.

He told police he drove because he “just wanted to get home”.

His licence was immediately cancelled and his car was impounded.

Magistrate Richard Pithouse said it was astounding Bolton hadn’t caused a major incident.

“It’s a fairly high reading,” he said.

“How you didn’t involved yourself in real trouble, I don’t know.

“You were doing the right thing (by taking the train) — sort of.”

The court heard Bolton had a drink-driving history.

He was convicted and fined $1000 and his licence cancelled for 32 months.

Bolton’s car was also impounded for a further 28 days.
