Volunteers of a local football club have been left shaken after a man was stabbed by a group of “teens” in broad daylight just hours before hundreds of kids arrived for training.
Police are investigating a stabbing at Point Cook, in Melbourne’s west on Monday afternoon after a man was confronted by six males, believed to be teens, before he received a laceration to his lower body.
It is believed the group attended the carpark of Point Cook Football Club (PCFC) on Saltwater Prom about 1.30pm before the altercation took place.
Neither the alleged offenders or victim are believed to be connected to the club.
A man in his 30s was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The six men fled the scene and no arrests had been made as of Tuesday morning.
PCFC President Ivo Havard said two volunteers were at the club cleaning up from the weekend when the incident unfolded “very quickly” in front of them.
“It’s a pretty horrific situation, we had some of our people down there and they are pretty shaken up, there was a pool of blood right near our social rooms,” Mr Havard said.
“A group of teens, I don’t know how many but they would have been 18 or 19, arrived and all of a sudden you’ve got this fella in a pretty bad way.
“It’s disappointing and devastating, we are fortunate to not have the anti-social activity around our facilities that some clubs contend with.
“I have spoken with both volunteers, they will be okay. Football people are very resilient but they have been offered counselling by police and we have assisted with the investigation.”
Mr Havard said while it was confronting, the club worked quickly to make sure hundreds of kids could come down and enjoy training safely on Monday evening.
The alleged attack came just hours before families were forced to flee from a western suburbs shopping centre after a group of machete-wielding men became involved in a bloodied brawl.
