Point Cook home invaders allegedly threatened to ‘burn down’ house

Police say a terrifying home invasion in Melbourne’s west was “retaliation” for a stabbing three weeks earlier.

Police say a terrifying home invasion in Point Cook is believed to have been “retaliation” for an alleged stabbing of one of the accused mens’ brother just three weeks earlier.

Two residents of a Bayside Road address were heard screaming over a triple-0 call on August 23, as two men stormed the address with a cricket bat and baseball bat and assaulted them.

One of the men allegedly demanded the occupants find and bring another man to the house “or else I’ll come inside and torch the place”.

A police helicopter was rushed to the scene, hovering overhead as a third man allegedly beeped a car horn to alert the two intruders to the helicopter’s presence.

Detectives allege the trio fled the scene in a brown Mercedes, driving “erratically” and “at speed” through Point Cook before dumping the car in an underground car park and running on foot.

Investigators believe the alleged ringleader of the home invasion, Rymon Sarkis, 28, was searching for a man he believed was responsible for bashing and stabbing his brother on July 31.

In Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, Detective senior constable Patrick Galea said police understood Mr Sarkis had allegedly recruited the other two accused men, David Brown, 34 and Abdul Dabbouss, 41, earlier that day.

“If you take the account given by Sarkis on face value, they didn't know him until the time of the offence,” he said. “It appears they met him that day.”

Sen. Const. Galea said the alleged home invasion appears to be a “culmination” of a series of events which included the attempted firebombing of a car three days earlier.

He said the three residents of the home had since refused to provide statements about what happened and charges had not yet been laid for the alleged earlier incidents.

Magistrate Rose Falla said it “boggled the mind” why two men would agree to participate in a serious offence with someone they didn’t know.

Police have alleged Mr Brown’s involvement was limited to a role as the “getaway driver”, while Mr Sarkis and Mr Dabbouss were alleged to have committed the home invasion.

The three men were arrested allegedly hiding in shops around Point Cook later that day and were charged with aggravated home invasion, recklessly causing injury, unlawful assault and theft.

Mr Sarkis is facing additional charges of making threats to inflict serious injury, threats to damage property, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, reckless driving and possession of an imitation firearm and ammunition.

Mr Brown and Mr Dabbouss were granted bail on October 5 and November 3 respectively, while Mr Sarkis remains in custody.

The three men have yet to enter pleas and will return to court for committal mention on November 17.
