Paw Kye: Werribee teen sentenced after ‘brazen’ random sex attack

A teenager in Melbourne’s west sexually assaulted a mother in front her young child and grandfather before masturbating in police custody.

What happens after a sexual assault?

A Werribee teenager sexually assaulted a woman in front of her young son repeatedly until witnesses saved her and detained him during a random attack on a “family street”, a court has heard.

Paw Kye, 19, was arrested on August 22 after the attack, which saw the “heavily intoxicated” youth tell the woman he “loved them”.

He had been out drinking with three friends, just three days ahead of his 19th birthday, when he left the group and approached a woman sitting on a nature strip with her 6-year-old son and grandfather about 5.05pm.

Police say he began groping her repeatedly, becoming “increasingly forceful”, as he attempted to drag the woman across the street.

She told him he was scaring her and her child, saying: “you’re hurting me, you need to go home, I’m calling the police”.

The woman got up and tried to walk Kye away from the area but he became more aggressive, groping and biting her breast.

She fought back “desperately” pulling his hands repeatedly off her and feared he was going to hurt her.

Three witnesses were able to stop the sexual assault, pushing Kye off the woman and detaining him until police arrived at 5.15pm.

He was arrested and taken to Werribee Police Station, where he continued to behave in an inappropriate manner, urinating on a wall and masturbating.

Kye faced Werribee Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, for sentencing after pleading guilty to numerous charges including sexual assault, recklessly causing injury, and acting in a indecent manner while in custody.

Prosecutors argued that intoxicated or not, Kye should be handed a stiff penalty for the “brazen and sexually motivated attack” on a family street.

“The accused‘s behaviours and actions from the initial incident through to police custody have raised serious concerns,” a prosecutor said.

“This was a dangerous action taken against a random and innocent member of the community.”

Magistrate Mike Wardell sentenced Kye to an 18 month community corrections order after taking into account his young age, 32 days spent in custody, lack of prior offending and troubled background.

“I hope you take this opportunity to address the issues in your life that led you to committing these offences,” he said.

“Because if you are to reoffend in a similar matter in the future it’s almost certain you will be sentenced to a term of imprisonment.”
