A Melbourne man who repeatedly stabbed and almost killed a teenager during a drug deal gone wrong has been jailed.
Obsa Gudina, 23, had only months earlier been released from prison when he attacked the 15-year-old boy on March 22, 2019, the County Court heard this month.
Gudina met his victim in Sunshine North after making contact with him through a Facebook friend.
The boy’s mother drove her teenage son to the deal and witnessed the horrific attack, Judge Phillip Coish told the court.
“Shortly after they arrived, you and an unknown male approached their motor vehicle and spoke to (them) … you then snatched a packet of cannabis from the victim,” Judge Coish told the court.
“The victim tried to retrieve the cannabis and there was a physical struggle during which a large knife in a black sheath fell from your pants.
“The victim retreated, then fearing for the safety of his mother, ran at you and tried to tackle you.
“During this altercation, you stabbed the victim repeatedly before you ran away with the cannabis.”
The boy was left with two stab wounds to his chest, a collapsed lung, a deep gash down to the bone in his arm and a cut to his leg.
A paediatrician told the court the injuries were life threatening and the victim could have died without medical intervention.
Gudina pleaded guilty to theft, recklessly cause injury and breaching his community corrections order.
Judge Coish said Gudina had a traumatic childhood in Ethiopia and arrived in Australia as a refugee with his family in 2006.
He had also spent time in an Ethiopian prison in 2013 aged just 15 after he accidentally shot and killed his niece during a visit to his birth country.
Gudina was abusing Xanax and alcohol at time of the offence, the court heard.
Judge Coish said Gudina’s teenage victim now suffered flashbacks, nightmares and post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the attack.
“The victim was young, you were armed with a knife … you inflicted life-threatening injuries on your victim,” he told the court.
Judge Coish sentenced Gudina to six years’ jail with a non parole period of four years.
