A fast food giant has planted a second flag in a booming outer northern Melbourne suburb and has set its sights on injecting millions into the local economy.

McDonald’s Rosenthal Village opened as Sunbury’s second store on Tuesday, located near the new Rosenthal estate – which recently sold its 1000th home – and shopping centre.

The original Sunbury Macca’s is one of the busiest in the state, serving about 650 customers on average every morning before 10.30am.

McDonald’s Rosenthal Village licensee and Sunbury local Linley Larkin said it was “an honour” to contribute to the area’s growth.

“This is a big deal for the town,” she said.

“The area has grown quickly but still has that town vibe to it which is cool.

“I think it’s nice to be giving people the chance to train people and watch careers launch. In Sunbury we see a lot of people who move on from our store that come back and say hello.

“Our third customer today was an ex-employee who worked with us at Sunbury … it’s a nice little community”.

Sunbury’s population, currently at about 40,000 people, is tipped to exceed 100,000 by 2041, with the number of dwellings expected to more than double in the next 20 years.

The new store will hold a grand opening on May 27, with the next few weeks all about “getting to know” the community according to Ms Larkin.

“We want to get the community to come and not get too hung up on the bells and whistles of it all,” she said.

“We really want to meet the people who support us and make those connections”.

Ms Larkin owns the original Sunbury Macca’s as well as the Gisborne site 15 minutes up the road, with all three combined employing 450 locals, with about another 100 on the way.

It is projected the new store will inject more than $8.8 million into the local economy.

Sunbury Basketball Association, Sunbury Kangaroos Football and Netball Club and Sunbury United Football Club are among the local clubs the new store has supported so far.

The new restaurant is fitted with modern decor, a dual lane drive thru, dedicated partner delivery room, McCafé, PlayPlace and party room.
