The family of a young dad battling terminal brain and heart cancer are reaching out to the community for support, to help his wife and young daughter with their future.

Werribee man Matthew Haughton was suddenly diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called Angiosarcoma in November last year, a week before his 26th birthday.

He began chemotherapy to fight the illness, but in mid-January he was told that tumours had formed on his heart.

Days later, after complaining of headaches, scans found that several tumours had also formed on his brain.

Due to the aggressive spread of his cancer and the tumours in multiple locations, doctors decided that they would not be able to operate on Matthew to remove the tumours.

A member of Matthew’s extended family, Braden Hickey, said it was unclear how long he had left.

“Initially they didn't think he was gonna make it one day... The surgeons said the next day that they were surprised he was still there,” Mr Hickey said.

“It could be a week, it could be a day, it could be a month, they don't know.”

With the future uncertain, Matthew’s family have reached out to the community to raise money to support his wife Teagan and three-year-old daughter Isabelle through a GoFundMe page.

“If and when he does pass, that's money to help Teagan with their home loan or Isabelle with schooling later on down the track,” Mr Hickey said.

Matthew and Teagan were only married in August of 2022, celebrating their nuptials in Olinda and honeymooning in Thailand.

With bright plans for the future, the couple bought a block of land in a Werribee estate a couple of years ago, with the home ready for them to move in early this year.

Mr Hickey said Matthew was very family-oriented and loved spending time with his relatives, especially at the footy supporting the Western Bulldogs.

“He’s a passionate Bulldogs supporter, for 20 years, he’d go to the footy with his wife, his late-grandfather and his Mum,” he said.

“He’s a big family person… they’re a very close family, their lives are very intertwined.”

Mr Hickey said the family wished to express gratitude to all those who decided to donate any amount of money to help.

“They appreciate all the support that they've given so far… they’re really touched by all the care.”
