Police have released a man without charge amid an investigation into a suspicious fire tore through a community centre in Werribee on Sunday.

Emergency services attended the Kelly Park Community Centre about 7pm after Triple-0 callers reported furnishings on fire at the rear of the venue.

Firefighters brought under control a significant fire at the rear of the two-storey building by 7.30pm.

“The rear and side of the structure including the kitchen and admin area was severely damaged by the fire but the hall remained untouched by fire,” Werribee Fire Brigade‘s Darryl Wells said.

“The brigade‘s quick response managed to contain the fire to the area of initial outbreak and prevent further damage to the building.”

The hall on Synnot St regularly hosts community groups, classes, exhibitions and recreational activities.

A Wyndham City Council spokeswoman said the fire caused “significant damage” to the building and it would need to be assessed by council.

“It is too early to forecast how long it will take for the centre to be operational,” she said.

“We are currently working with all the community groups to relocate them to other facilities so that they can continue their activities.”

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said an investigation into the fire was ongoing but a man who was arrested nearby had been released pending further inquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
