A man who murdered his mother in their Werribee home, then claimed she had been killed by intruders, has been jailed for 20 years.

Jamie Ian Willis, 39, had been evicted from the Taworri Cres home he shared with his mother, Caroline, about noon on May 24 last year after a magistrate issued an intervention order against him.

But less than two hours later he returned and stabbed his 70-year-old mother at least 19 times with a kitchen knife and bashed her to the head and neck during a “violent and frenzied attack”.

The Supreme Court heard Willis initially told police four men had broken into the home and held him hostage at gunpoint while they killed his mother.

But he soon changed his story and confessed to the horrific attack, later pleading guilty to her murder.

The court heard Willis had stayed overnight in the house after the brutal murder, waiting until the next day to call 000.

Willis and his mother both had a history of mental health problems, the court heard, and the pair argued frequently, with Ms Willis applying for an intervention order against her son due to his “verbal abuse, controlling behaviour and intimidation”.

During his police interview, Willis labelled his mother “f***ing evil” and abusive.

Willis had more than two decades ago been diagnosed with a delusional disorder and schizophrenia but refused to take his antipsychotic medication.

He had also lapsed into regular ice-use, which lead to the breakdown of his relationship with the mother of his three children.

Justice Lex Lasry yesterday jailed Willis for 20 years and ordered he serve at 14 years before being eligible for parole.

“Once more a woman has been murdered in her own home where she should have felt safe, secure and protected, especially in light of the intervention order,” he said.

“As is all too common, her death was the culmination of a lengthy history of hostility and family violence.

“Once again, this case raises the important community issues and the toxic connection between drugs, mental health and family violence.”

Justice Lasry ruled Willis’ mental health problems reduced his moral culpability and that he would find prison tougher than someone in “normal health”.

Willis has already spent more than a year in custody.
