Shattered kneecaps, broken ribs and fractures from a horrifying crash will not stop a passionate biker from getting back in the saddle as he faces a long road to recovery. Werribee’s Daniel J Pickering was on his way home from work on his bike, riding the 80km/h limit on Princes Highway, when the car in front of him suddenly slammed its brakes.
Unable to stop in time, Mr Pickering, a father of two, went sliding into the rear of the car, leaving his beloved bike totalled and him with serious injuries including broken ribs, broken collar bones and femur, fractured spine, neck, pelvis and facial fractures.
After undergoing six extensive surgeries to mend his broken bones, Mr Pickering, 28, now faces a long road to recovery as he relearns how to walk again and sit up by himself.
But Mr Pickering, who works as a sign-writer, said although he was extremely grateful to be alive, losing his dream bike was “worse than the pain of all the injuries combined”.
“Riding my bike was my escape from everything, it was my freedom … what’s heartbreaking is I finally bought my dream bike, a 2008 GSX-R1000 and it only last three weeks,” he said.
Mr Pickering, who started riding dirt bikes at the age of four, said his passion for bikes was “passed down in the family”.
“My dad’s always been a bit of a rev head; he loves these bikes. I think that’s where my passion comes from. He’s got a photo of me on his Suzuki RVV250 when I was maybe about five or six years old,” he said.
In fact, his love of bikes is greater than the fear of getting back on two wheels, he said.
An online fundraiser has been organised to help Mr Pickering and his family lighten the financial burden until he can be back on his feet, which has raised $495 of the $20000 target.
Mr Pickering said every donation meant “the absolute world” to him and he was grateful to anyone who has or will donate.
“Any donations help out immensely because unfortunately bills and rent don’t stop while I’m in hospital... it really helps with my recovery as it will take a lot of stress off my shoulders,” he said.
“If the donations exceed the goal we will put it all towards road trauma victims because once we hit the target that’s enough for us. Anything extra is just an absolute blessing.”
