A newly married couple was blissfully celebrating their wedding reception before receiving a phone call that brought their world crashing down.
Victoria’s Jamie Rowley went to the hospital to get a bad toothache checked the day before he said his wedding vows to his now-wife Jessica Rowley.
The doctors did some tests and sent tyre fitter Mr Rowley on his way to marry the love of his life. But as they celebrated their union the next day, the couple received a call from the hospital informing Mr Rowley that the ache was related to his bone marrow.
He was later diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow.
“I was scared and so worried … cancer runs in his family, but I just didn’t think it was going to be this early for him,” Ms Rowley said.
Mr Rowley has since been admitted to The Alfred, where he is going through chemo, but Ms Rowley said “he was not having a good run with it”.
“It’s been terrible for him. He’s got fevers, trembles, and he can’t really do things for himself anymore because the chemo has knocked him out,” she said.
“He’s got to have a gum transplant because the cancer is eating away his gums.”
Ms Rowley said she was caring for their three young kids while Mr Rowley receives treatment, but was concerned the financial burden was taking a toll on the young family.
“It’s tough because we all were involved in a major car accident 18 months ago, which left Jamie with a broken foot and screws were put in his foot, and so he hasn’t worked since,” she said.
An online fundraiser has been organised to help ease the financial burden, which has raised $3280 of the $20,000 target.
Ms Rowley said any donations would greatly help the family.
“Every dollar counts, especially in this day and age.”
