Faulty boom gates at two level crossings known as accident hot spots in Melton are causing traffic chaos with motorists and trains brought to a halt.
The boom gates at level crossings on Exford Rd and Coburns Rd were reported to be stuck at 12.45pm with motorists urged to consider travelling along Ferris Rd at Cobblebank to the east as an alternative.
Traffic built up across all three level crossings as motorists were either unaware of the fault or funnelled towards the Ferris Rd crossing.
Traffic in the vicinity of Brooklyn Rd, Coburns Rd, Exford Rd, Abey Rd and Station Rd remains heavy.
A VicRoads spokesperson said technicians were on scene and urged motorists to obey police instructions.
It is illegal to drive through lowered boom gates.
Locals on social media claimed they had been stuck in traffic for more than 90 minutes after attempting to drive through a level crossing about 1pm.
“Took me hour and half to get from Coburns Rd detour around to Ferris and into south,” one man said.
More to come.
