Truck goes up in flames near Melton

Shocking footage has emerged of a truck fire that forced the closure of a busy Melbourne freeway as the driver narrowly escaped unharmed.

Emergency services were called to a truck fire on the Western Fwy near Station Rd, Melton on Tuesday about 8pm.

Crews arrived at the scene where a semi-trailer loaded with roadworks machinery, belonging to transport company Elite Roads was well alight.

Most of the fire was contained to the wheels of the semi-trailer.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) and Country Fire Authority (CFA) crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire, with the incident declared under control within 10 minutes.

All inbound lanes were closed with traffic brought to a stand still as authorities urged motorists to avoid the area.

A short time later, the freeway was reopened but limited to the inbound emergency lane as crews remained on scene.

Traffic was impacted for several hours following the blaze.

One witness, Erin Ferris said she drove past and saw the fire before immediately calling emergency services.

“We could see the flame from the entry to the freeway, the driver was already out of the truck and two motorists were pulled over in front of the truck … it was very much alight,” Ms Ferris said.

Paramedics were not required for the incident.
