An auto wrecking yard in Melton has been significantly damaged after it was engulfed in flames, with more than 40 firefighters battling the blaze. Watch the video

Melton auto wreckers goes up in flames

More than 40 firefighters battled a blaze at a Melton wrecking yard after witnesses reported hearing gas bottles explode.

At least 12 crews were called to the scene on Collins Rd about 10.20am Wednesday.

Firefighters arrived within seven minutes to find the 25m by 15m factory on fire, which

authorities say started inside the auto wrecker yard building.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesman said the wrecking yard and neighbouring warehouses were evacuated but there were no reported injuries.

A warning has been issued for neighbouring business and homes due to smoke in the area.

The EPA, Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police and Melton City Council are assisting at the scene.
