A Caroline Springs truck driver who instigated a brutal road rage attack and attempted to mow down his estranged wife has been jailed for two years and three months.

Bill Kontogeorgis, 59, appeared before the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on June 9 for sentencing after accepting a plea deal on 10 charges including threats to kill, causing injury and reckless conduct.

The court heard Kontogeorgis began following, and then rammed a car containing his ex-wife and her new partner on Ballarat Rd in Deer Park at about 4.15pm on November 21.

When they got out of the car to confront him he then tried to run the pair down - causing the boyfriend to tumble over the bonnet and slam into the ground.

“I want to f…… kill you,” he’s reported to have screamed at his ex-wife during the exchange.

In front of horrified motorists, the attack descended into a street brawl, with Kontogeorgis slashing the other man’s wrist and hands with a knife through the window of his car.

The incident only ended when he was beaten unconscious with a shovel - an act caught on video and played before the court.

Kontogeorgis was found by paramedics face down on the road and rushed to Royal Melbourne hospital in a serious condition, while his victims drove themselves to hospital.

His lawyer, Paul Kounas, had previously told the court the incident occurred in the context of an “acrimonious” break-up, and sought to paint his client as the victim.

He said Kontogeorgis had been subjected to continuing harassment from the two victims, and the “extreme level of violence” shown in the video should cast doubt on his role as the aggressor.

Previously describing the charges as a "pack of lies", Kontogeorgis claimed all he did was defend himself.

“Please your worship, I’ve never been a threat to the public, I’m a good citizen,” he said.

Prosecutors previously cautioned the captured footage only showed a “snippet” of the events and nothing about the lead up to the "ugly incident".

“This incident happened at peak hour on Ballarat Rd, " a prosecutor said.

"It shows someone getting out of the car with a weapon and is dealt with accordingly. There was a specific belief as to what (the victim) thought was necessary.”

The matter had previously been set down for a five day hearing later in the year, however it returned to court in May after a resolution was reached.

Before magistrate Robert Stary, Kontogeorgis was convicted and jailed for two years and three months, with a non-parole period of 18 months.
