A young thug who bashed a man with a baseball bat during a violent carjacking at a train station in Melbourne’s west and went on a shopping spree with a stolen credit card could be free in less than a year.

Anterio Ernesto Foletti today pleaded guilty in the County Court over the vicious attack on a stranger at Keilor Plains railway station in St Albans on January 26 last year.

The court heard two victims had been asleep in a Toyota Corolla parked at the station when Foletti stole a wallet and keys to a VW Golf then drove off, shouting “cops!” to rouse the victims as he fled the scene.

The 23-year-old father of one returned to the station car park about two hours later with an unknown accomplice and brandished a baseball bat, telling the pair to stay in the Corolla.

When one of the victims got out of the car, Foletti whacked him across the face with the bat and then fled in the VW which had been parked next to the Corolla.

Online banking records showed a credit card in the stolen wallet had been used to buy $200 worth of cigarettes, energy drinks and petrol from four different service stations in Taylors Lakes and Sydenham.

The VW Golf has never been recovered.

CCTV cameras captured Foletti assaulting his victim at Keilor Plains station, and footage from security cameras at the service stations showed him using the stolen credit card.

Foletti’s lawyer said her client had “no memory of what occurred” that day, but he was ashamed of his actions.

She told the court Foletti had an acquired brain injury from a serious motorbike crash in 2012 where he had not been wearing a helmet.

He also had a history of drug use, including Xanax and methylamphetamine, his lawyer said.

“And he hopes to one day be able to … be a proper father to his (three-year-old) daughter,” she said.

Judge John Smallwood said Foletti was young enough to deserve a chance to get his life back on track.

“You have an acquired brain injury and it’s clear there are some psychological malfunctions that are causing you difficulties in a prison environment,” he said.

“For six months you did very well (in custody) but an altercation has placed you in lockdown, which is concerning.

“This was a serious example of aggravated carjacking — you had a weapon with you and it was in fact used, not just used to threaten.

“You’ve expressed remorse, you’ve got reason to rehabilitate yourself … you’re still at an age where the chance should be taken with you to give you an earlier chance of parole,” he said.

Judge Smallwood sentenced Foletti to four years in prison, with a minimum of two to be served before he is eligible for parole.

He has already spent 420 days behind bars in pre-sentence detention.
