An “abhorrent” act of animal cruelty has left two cats severely burned after being doused in a substance believed to be hot industrial grade glue.

The two stray felines were spotted by an animal lover in Werribee on October 14 covered in liquid.

But the alarm wasn’t raised until the following day when the woman noticed the cats’ fur and skin was peeling away and they were in extreme pain.

One of the cats, a female, was caught and has been treated by a vet.

It suffered severe burns to the left side of its face, the top of its head and along its spine.

RSPCA Victoria inspectorate team leader Karen Collier said the cat was expected to make a full recovery, but she said the other cat was yet to be found.

“Sadly, we suspect this was intentional cruelty. It’s abhorrent that someone can commit such a callous act toward innocent animals,” Ms Collier said.

The RSPCA is working with Wyndham Council to try to find the second cat and Ms Collier urged anyone with information about the incident to get in touch.

“RSPCA Victoria’s inspectorate is working tirelessly to investigate and prosecute the individuals who have committed these offences, but we need those who have information to come forward and make a report,” Ms Collier said.

Anyone with information is asked to call 03 9224 2222 or visit the RSPCA’s website to make a report.
