Abandoned homes in Footscray, Frankston go up in flames

Fire crews have battled two suspicious fires at abandoned homes on opposite sides of Melbourne, with fearful neighbours ringing triple-0.

Fire has ripped through two abandoned homes on opposite sides of Melbourne, with police investigating the suspicious blazes in Footscray and Frankston.

Several neighbours phoned triple-0 to report the fire at 265 Ballarat Rd Footscray about 8pm Sunday, with a single storey timber house fully alight.

Fire Rescue Victoria said nobody was found inside at the time and the house was abandoned with no gas or power connected.

The fire was quickly brought under control by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus who launched an aggressive internal attack.

Then at 6.15am Monday, Fire Rescue Victoria crews were called to a fire at an abandoned weatherboard house at Cricklewood Ave in Frankston, arriving at 6.19am.

The fire was quickly brought under control in a couple of minutes.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said the fire was considered suspicious and the scene had been handed over to police.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the fire caused minor damage to a wall when it caught alight about 6am.

No one was inside the house at the time of the fire.

At this stage, the fire is being treated as suspicious and investigations remain ongoing.
