Warrnambool is finally up and running in the Big V Division 1 men’s competition.
The Seahawks broke through for their first wins of the season on a double header weekend over Collingwood (89-62) and RMIT Redbacks (78-68).
Playing coach Alex Gynes, a former NBL player, was heavily influential across the weekend finishing with 28 points and 17 rebounds in the win over Collingwood.
He then backed it up with 28 points and 16 boards against RMIT on Sunday afternoon.
But he was quick to turn the attention to other members of his team including point guard Benson Steere and Ollie Bidmade.
Steere finished with double figure point totals in both games while Bidmade was a force at the defensive end — he finished with six steals against the Redbacks.
“I thought those guys really set the tone for us in both games,” Gynes said.
“Benson lifted the pressure on the opposition’s guards and it flowed through for rest of the team.
“Our defensive intensity is something we had spoken about before the game and the boys certainly delivered.
“It was a fantastic effort across the weekend before the Easter break.”
The Seahawks were able to improve their shooting throughout the weekend as well — especially from deep.
They finished with just 5-22 from beyond the arc against Collingwood before improving to 7-16 in Sunday’s game.
“Getting the monkey off the back certainly would have helped with that,” Gynes said.
“Now we’ve got to hope we can keep building from here.”
In other Division 1 games, Shepparton (99) were too good for Bulleen (72) as they sit top of the ladder in the early stages of the season.
