Victoria’s Covid outbreak: Suburbs with highest rate of infections

Victoria has recorded its second day of above 20,000 Covid cases as we reveal hot spots in every part of the state and the postcodes with the highest rate of infection.

Victoria set to increase access to rapid antigen tests

For the second day in a row, Victoria has recorded more than 20,000 new cases as authorities estimate one in 50 residents are now Covid-positive.

The state reported 21,728 new infections and six deaths in the previous 24 hours, on par with Thursday’s tally of 21,997.

There are now 69,680 active cases of the virus in Victoria and 743 people have died during the current outbreak.

The new cases were detected from 68,202 test results provided yesterday with the positive test rate rising to just under one in three.

Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley said on Friday it was estimated about one in 50 Victorians were now Covid-positive, with than figure rising for people aged in their 20s to about one in 20.

Only three out of 10 PCR tests are being returned by the next day, the Health Department revealed this week, warning the true figure of cases is likely higher as the testing network is overwhelmed.

In the first week of 2022, Victoria has already recorded three times as many cases of Covid than the total number of infections in 2021.

All Melbourne Local Government Areas recorded triple figures of new cases overnight, with Casey recording the highest caseload for a third day in a row with 1633 new cases — taking the active tally to 4801.

Melbourne picked up 1368 new cases reaching 3956, Brimbank racked up 889 cases for a total of 3771 active cases, Melton saw 758 new infections to reach a total of 2505, while Hume recorded 733 in the past 24 hours to reach 2444.

Other LGAs rounding out the top 10 included Greater Dandenong (728), Moreland (723), Port Phillip (716), Stonnington (657) and Wyndham (651).
