 Arrest over Warrnambool house fire

Police have charged two men over an alleged arson attempt on a Warrnambool house while two people slept inside.

Police have alleged the men, aged 39 and 36, set fire to the front of the Raglan Parade house on June 29, 2021.

A man and woman were asleep in the master bedroom at the time and despite the fire causing a large explosion, they escaped without injury.

The home was extensively damaged.

A 39-year-old man was arrested at an address at Currumbin, Queensland on Friday, June 17 after Queensland Police executed a warrant.

Warrnambool detectives subsequently travelled to Queensland and extradited the man back to Victoria.

He has since been charged with arson and conduct endangering life and has been remanded in custody.

This week Warrnambool detectives executed a warrant at an address in Halliwell Court, Corio, where they arrested a 36-year-old man over the incident.

He was also charged with arson and conduct endangering life.

The 36-year-old has also been charged with a range of firearms offences in relation to a separate investigation into an alleged burglary in Shepparton.

According to police, a number of firearms were allegedly stolen from a property on August 29, 2021.

The man, who was also remanded in custody, is the ninth person to be charged in relation to the alleged burglary.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Raven. of Warrnambool Crime Investigation Unit, said the nature of the offending was “concerning”.

“Police have seen far too many times how a house fire can get out of control, leaving those in the house at great risk of harm”.

He said detectives were not looking for anybody else in relation to the fire.

“The community can rest assured we will continue to work tirelessly to apprehend offenders and put them before court.”

Both men will reappear in court at later dates.
