Tributes are pouring in for a “beautiful young man” killed while cycling in Melbourne’s west on Thursday.
Angus Collins, 22, was killed when he was struck by a concrete truck while cycling on Footscray Rd, near the Dock Link Rd intersection, about 12.30pm on February 2.
The truck driver stopped at the scene where, tragically, Angus died.
“Angus tragically lost his life while doing one of the things he loved doing – riding his bike,” a GoFundMe set up to support his family says.
Set up by Brunswick Cycling Club, the GoFundMe had raised more than $14000 for his funeral expenses by Sunday morning.
“Such a beautiful young man who always had a wonderful smile and brought energy and joy to all those around him,” club president Tony Maughan said.
“You were such a big part of the #brunswickcyclingfamily and we so loved being able to be part of your life – on and off the bike.
“You will always have a place in our hearts and will always be remembered for your kindness, your energy, and your constant and infectious smile.”
The popular student attended Williamstown High School and graduated in 2018.
A state and national level road cyclist, he went on to study sports science and business but continued with his passion to coach elite road cyclists.
Tributes have been flowing for the young life “taken too soon”.
Callan Douglas said he was lucky enough to watch his “good friend” climb the junior ranks.
“A super talent on the bike, but even more so off it.
“A truly kind, genuinely happy and always enthusiastic human who thrived on life and adventure,” Mr Douglas said on social media.
“He was always full of laughs, inappropriate jokes and a wealth of knowledge beyond his years and never had a bad word to say.”
Mr Douglas described him as a “brilliant young man who has been taken far too soon”.
“The world has been robbed of a truly remarkable person. It was always a pleasure to share the track, the road and everything in between with you mate.
“We are all going to miss you matey. This one cuts real deep and I’m absolutely gutted. RIP Gussy”
Williamstown local Adam Goldrick said Angus was a “dear and positively influential friend of my own son and many other locals”.
“He was a keen and competitive cycle rider whilst studying Physiotherapy,” he said.
“I send my condolences to his devastated family and friends who will be mourning his loss as our family is now. RIP Angus Collins.”
Sarah Gigante said he would be loved and missed “forever and always”.
“We all wish this was the nightmare that it feels like, rather than real life.
“Angus, you were one of the nicest, kindest and smiliest people. I can’t remember how many times you made cycling even more fun than it already was.
“It’s not fair that you were taken so soon and it hurts to think you were simply doing what you love, riding your bike like always. Lots of love from all your mates forever and always. We will all miss you so so much.”
Brunswick Cycling Club will host a BBQ for friends and loved ones “to remember, to hug, to cry or just sit quietly and reflect” on Sunday afternoon.
Police have asked for anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashcam/CCTV footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
