The Rubens to perform live at the Informal Formal

Year 12 students are likely to miss out on their school formals due to coronavirus restrictions. But an Aussie rock group has teamed up with a mental health service and KFC to bring it live to student lounge rooms across the country.

Dust off your tux and gowns and get glammed up, because you’re invited to an informal formal.

The coronavirus pandemic means many Year 12s will miss out on their school formal and while there’s a chance some formals may still go ahead, they’re not going to be the grand shindigs they usually are.

So KFC and digital mental health service ReachOut have teamed up to give studious school leavers a chance to kick up their heels at home as part of the Informal Formal, with beloved Aussie rockers The Rubens bringing their bangers live to the lounge rooms of fans around the country.

If you’re a formal-less Year 12 student — or you want to reminisce on your formal of years gone by — you can get your snazzy formal duds on and tune in to the gig from 7pm on Friday, September 25 via the KFC Facebook page.

The Rubens said they were “stoked” to be part of the Informal Formal.

“Looking back at our own formals, it was a moment to enjoy yourself and mark the end of an era at school, and while so many Aussies can’t have their celebrations during this time, we hope this gives them a little bit of a moment to enjoy despite the circumstances,” they said.

“We’ll be playing some oldies as well as our newest release ‘Time Of My Life’. Tune in and we’ll tune up.”

And to ensure you remain well-fed, the fast food giant will also hold a competition for students to shout their entire Year 12 class a KFC dinner to be delivered on the night.

Students can enter via the website from 9am on Monday, September 21 until 9pm on Wednesday, September 23.

The virtual concert also aims to shine a light on the services of ReachOut and encourage young Australians to take a proactive approach to their mental health.

ReachOut chief executive Ashley de Silva said live gig was a chance for students to celebrate “but also to check in with themselves and others during a time that can be tough even in non-COVID-19 circumstances”.

KFC Australia’s chief marketing officer Kristi Woolrych said while nothing could replace attending a formal in person, this gig could bring some light relief.

“We know that live music is a fantastic way to raise spirits and give a big of a boost and we hope that the Informal Formal can provide a bit of fun to those who are doing it tough — especially the Year 12 students heading into exams,” she said.

Fans can tune in to the livestream on KFC’s Facebook page.

If you need help, free mental health support is available 24/7 at ReachOut.com.
