That time I was AirDropped unsolicited porn on my morning Melbourne train commute

I thought my daily morning commute crammed on a peak hour train, often with my face in someone’s armpit, was bad enough — then a complete stranger sent me a picture of his junk, writes Jordy Atkinson.

Generation SEXT

I thought being crammed on a peak hour train, often with my face in someone’s armpit, was bad enough — then a complete stranger sent me a picture of his junk.

As the AirDrop request from “Stephen’s iPad” popped up on my phone one morning this week, I scanned the carriage for the pervert but couldn’t pick him from among the crowd.

Underneath the gross image were two options — “accept” or “decline”.

Naturally I hit decline, but not before I was given a full frontal view of what Stephen had to offer delivered right to my most personal device.

I felt violated.

And in my haste to purge the image from my brain — so far unsuccessful — I didn’t take a screenshot to show police, I just made fleeting remark about it to a friend I had been messaging and pretended everything was fine.

But in that moment, I hoped Stephen would suffer the kind of pain only experienced by standing on Lego in bare feet.

How dare this creep send genitalia shots to unsuspecting phones — what if they belonged to kids?

How dare he make me feel ashamed to receive such an image (what if someone looking over my shoulder had seen and thought I was into that sort of thing?)

It was about 8.15am.

I hadn’t even had my morning coffee yet but the ghastly sight of his pecker was enough of a wake-up jolt to take me from nought to 100 within seconds.

I assume I wasn’t the only one to get this request.

Never did I think the handy AirDrop tech feature, which makes sending pictures to colleagues and friends so easy, would be used to sexually harass people.

Yes, my settings were set to receive message from “everyone” but to say it’s my fault this happened would be victim blaming.

Instead of telling me to change my privacy settings, how about men just stop being vile?

What in the name of all that is good in this world would make them think it’s OK to do this?

And it’s not the first time this has happened. I’ve been sent similarly graphic images by randoms on Facebook and Twitter too. And so have many of my friends.

This time, though, knowing revolting Stephen was just metres away from me was a little too close for comfort.

It’s no wonder women feel increasingly unsafe just going about their daily lives.

I’ve now changed my AirDrop settings as a precaution.

Just like I protect myself by taking taxis and Ubers when its dark, avoid eye contact with the general public — especially men — and always walk with my keys in hand at night in case I’m attacked.

And as for you Stephen, how dare you leave unsuspecting females such as myself feeling like they need to take a shower.

If your goal wasn’t to threaten, intimidate or lord your manhood over me, what were you hoping to achieve?

And men, don’t mistake my lighthearted tone for tolerance of unwarranted pics of this nature.

They’re filthy and disgusting and abhorrent and most definitely not welcome on my phone.

Oh, and sending such things to people without their consent is actually a crime — and it carries a maximum two-year jail term.
