The Melbourne Boomers notched a third straight win to climb to a 3-2 record, this time taking down the Dandenong Rangers on Saturday in another tough local derby clash between the two great rivals.

While happy to bank the points, the win at Dandenong Stadium was the first game on a treacherous run that will see Melbourne embark on six games in just 16 days.

Following a tight 24-22 first quarter, the Boomers skipped clear in the second period with a blazing 34-23 run, propelled by a number of sharpshooters who picked up no fewer than seven triples for the half and an overall 63 per cent shooting clip from the field.

Despite Dandenong’s best efforts after the long break, the Boomers held firm and opened the margin to a game-high 26 points by the final buzzer, the 101-75 win allowing them to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three battle for the Michele Timms Cup.

Steph Talbot (27 points, five assists and four three-pointers) was in hot form from start to finish while Lindsay Allen (18 points, five assists) continued her recent good run.

Maddie Garrick (18 points) and Jenna O’Hea (15 points) helped share the scoring load in what was a strong team effort.

Late in the game, Josie Stockill made her WNBL debut and found her way onto the scoresheet.

The Boomers finished the game with a season-high 101 points and eight blocks.

“We played really well, our flow is coming together and we are looking better the more time we spend together,” coach Guy Molloy said following the victory.

“We know we have good players across the court, and our depth is a plus.

“It was nice to see everyone getting involved in what is always a big game.”

Final scores: Melbourne Boomers 101 (Steph Talbot 27, Lindsay Allen 18, Maddie Garrick 18, Jenna O’Hea 15) defeated Dandenong Rangers 75 (Rebecca Cole 19, Rachel Jarry 18)
