Women’s National Basketball League: Melbourne Boomers roster is starting to get to know each other

As many predicted during a slow start to the season, the Melbourne Boomers have quickly found form on the back of their star-studded roster starting to spend a bit more time together.

As many predicted during a slow start to the Women’s National Basketball League season, the Melbourne Boomers have quickly found form on the back of their star-studded roster starting to spend a bit more time together.

After two losses to start their campaign, the Boomers responded with a win in Sydney last weekend, before flying to Canberra on Friday and handing the Capitals their first loss of the season. Just a week prior, the Capitals had beaten Melbourne by seven points in Geelong.

From the outset, the Boomers looked sharp and well-equipped to handle Canberra’s star-studded line-up.

Leading 22-20 at quarter-time, the Boomers executed strong defence during the second and third quarters and looked far more clinical in offence, helping them push the margin out to 19 points late in the third.

As expected, Canberra came home strongly and was helped along the way with no less than 11 trips to the foul line for free throws down the stretch.

Across the game, the home team put up 40 free throws and converted 30 of them while, at the other end, the Boomers went 15-from-18 from the charity stripe.

Though Canberra got to within four points late in the game, the Boomers remained in control and finished the game well, showing maturity and experience.

Steph Talbot (17 points), Lindsay Allen (17 points), Ezi Magbegor (15), Maddie Garrick (12) and Cayla George (12) provided a spread of scoring for the Boomers.

The 84-78 win positions the Boomers nicely at 2-2 ahead of a trip to Dandenong Stadium this Saturday night, followed by two big home games in the space of four days the following week.

On Monday, November 5 the Boomers will play host to the Bendigo Spirit at the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South for the annual Cup Eve Derby, which will be followed by a showdown with Sydney on Thursday November 8.

BOOMERS LAUNCH THREE-GAME MEMBERSHIPS

With nearly 2600 members already signed for season 2018/19, the Melbourne Boomers expect a few hundred more to join the club after launching their popular three-game membership packages.

This season’s mini-membership provides entry to three games for the price of two and the memberships start from $20.

“We have so many big games coming up and some really fun themes, like Dads and Daughters Day and our Girls Day Out,” Boomers general manager Justin Nelson said.

“The three-game memberships provide those supporters who may not necessarily get to every game with an opportunity to support the club and enjoy member benefits.”
