VSDCA: Spotswood sign Jarrod Martignago for 2022-23 season

A chance meeting has helped Spotswood land a former Premier Cricket wicketkeeper-batsman ahead of its second VSDCA season.

A chance meeting has helped Spotswood land one of the first recruiting blows of the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association off-season.

Ahead of its second season in the competition, Spotty has signed former Melbourne University wicketkeeper-batsman Jarrod Martignago for the 2022-23 season.

The experienced head just played one game last season in the Premier club’s Second XI after enjoying a fantastic season a year prior.

Spotswood president declared Martignago’s arrival as “what we (Spotswood) need”.

“He’s definitely going to bring a lot of experience to our playing group,” he said.

“He’s the type of player we could have used last season with such a young group.

“I met Jarrod by chance when he dropped by the ground to see our volunteer curator Len Robbins, who is also a former groundsman for Melbourne University.

“We got talking and said it would be fantastic to explore the opportunity of having him play for our club down the track.

“We sorted out all the nitty, gritty last week and it’s fantastic to have him locked away.”

Spotswood enjoyed a successful first season in the VDSCA, finishing in seventh position — just half a game outside the top six.

And it appears Spotty will again be pushing for a place in the finals after retaining its core group for next season.

Captain Jakson Knight took home the club’s batting award at the recent presentation night with 49 runs at an average of 47.67.

Meanwhile, Jarryd Vernon’s 22 wickets at 16.59 were enough for him to take out the bowling award.

“The boys have grown with experience and that should hold us in good stead for next season,” Wheeler said.

“I think a return to two-day cricket would suit us nicely because I think we’re a little better in that format. But we will see how that pans out.”

Spotswood will play in the east-west grouping next season with the club’s new clubrooms to officially open in September.
