VSDCA 2018-19: Brunswick ends Bayswater’s unbeaten start to North-East group season

SPIN twins Tim Daykin and Jack Moss strangled one of the most formidable batting line-ups in the VSDCA North-East group to inspire Brunswick to victory over Bayswater on Saturday.

The off-spinners bowled in tandem at Bayswater Oval, piling on the pressure after James Pearson (2-19), Leigh Brennan (2-21) and David McKay (2-29) made early inroads.

After reaching 2-46, previously-unbeaten Bayswater crashed to 7-64 when debutant Moss claimed his maiden First XI scalp.

The spinners combined for 3-38 from 16 overs as the Waters were routed in 39.3 overs for 109.

“To have two spin options available to us … I think it just gives us a bit more flexibility with our bowling, which is ideal,” Brunswick captain-coach Liam Murphy said.

Moss finished with 2-25 from seven overs on debut, while Daykin managed four maidens in his haul of 1-13 from nine overs.

“The wickets column has looked after itself if we’re able to bowl dry and put pressure on,” Murphy said.

“Tim is the perfect example of that. He bowled four maidens in his nine which is really impressive and was able to keep it really tight at one end.

“You have got to go at someone and Jack took two on the back of that pressure and so did (Pearson).

“He hasn’t taken big wickets, but his ability to be dry and patient really creates problems for the batsmen.”

Murphy said Moss, a regular Second XI wicket-taker, had made a “really impressive” start.

“He’s definitely earned his spot and he looked at ease with the environment against the top side in the competition,” he said.

Brunswick stumbled momentarily in its chase after opener Muhammad Shakeel (21 from 19 balls) retired hurt with severe cramp.

Murphy (0) and Justin Lampard (0) fell in quick succession, but Karl Mayne (33 not out) and Ben Moss (50 not out) steered the Wicks to a much-needed eight-wicket win.

“I think we have had patches of really positive cricket and then chilled out a little bit,” Murphy said.

“This game, it was on from ball one all the way through to the end.”

Brunswick hosts Balwyn in Round 7, which starts on Saturday.
