Bayswater Cricket Club’s future appears to be in outstanding hands after the club claimed the VSDCA’s under-15 representative crown.

The talented squad, coached by First XI regular Tim Nightingale, ended a long drought with the club’s win its very first in either the Craig Shield or its former incarnation the Hatch Shield.

The Waters raised the silverware with a thumping win over eastern suburbs neighbours Box Hill in the final at Kew’s Victoria Park last Sunday.

“It’s been 30 or 33 years, something like that,” Nightingale said. “They were awesome.

“We started mid-October, we had about 30 or 40 kids after trials. They were mostly from the RDCA but there were two from the FTGDCA and one from the YVCA. We always try to get kids from the outer-east. Four of them already play at Bayswater so four out of the 13 I’ve already coached.

“You sort of know the kids and you know the parents and that makes it much easier.

“It was the best bunch of parents and kids I’ve ever worked with.

“The team effort I think (was the key). Some of them didn’t know each other all that well but they got to know each other really quickly.”

After a quarter-final win over Malvern, the Waters beat Werribee in the semi-final to earn themselves a shot at a breakthrough shield win.

Box Hill won the toss and sent Bayswater to the crease first.

No.3 Gilbert Harries plundered 85 off 89 balls in 128 minutes with three fours while cameos from skipper Harry Flynn (48 of 101 balls in 128 minutes with three fours) and Will Spencer (41 off 38 balls in 38 minutes with 3 fours and 2 sixes) helped the Waters compile a daunting 4-206 from their 45 overs.

The target was always too hot for Box Hill to handle and the Mustangs were all out for 94 in 38.3 overs with six Waters bowlers picking up one or two scalps in an even team effort.

Nightingale is confident there’s plenty of talent in the Bayswater squad and he hopes most of that will take the crease at Bayswater Oval in years to come.

“Harry (Flynn) our captain has been picked in the Vic Metro team, so he’s stepping up nicely,” Nightingale said. “And a few are already in the Outer-East system.

“And there’s some really good prospects for First XI players for Bayswater.”
