Athletes from across Victoria – and one from Canberra – braved the heat for the Surf Coast Classic event in Geelong on Saturday evening as a Bellarine Athletics Club pole vaulter secured a win.
There was a strong local contingent from Bellarine, Chillwell, Deakin and Geelong Guild Athletics Clubs at John Landy Field with the day helping fundraise for those clubs’ winter cross country season.

Temperatures reached 36 degrees in Geelong on Saturday but some cloud cover and spray mist provided relief from the sweltering conditions.
Bellarine Athletics Club talent Lachlan Burns took out the pole vault with a five-metre leap, while Deakin athlete Ryan Crameri (33 minutes and 41 seconds) finished third in the 10,000m race behind Stoate.
The 10,000m was one of the main events on the day which was won by Bendigo’s Nathan Stoate with a time of 29 minutes and 55 seconds, having competed at the Zatopek:10 event in Melbourne last month.
Around 50 athletes competed in four separate 5000m races, with unassigned runner Reece Edwards taking the crown in 14 minutes and 41 seconds and local duo Evander Scott (Chillwell) and Liam Coughlan (Deakin) finishing second and fourth respectively.
Casey Cardinia’s Amiru Chandrasena won the long jump while Emma Berg (South Bendigo) threw 16.5 metres to win the shot put.
Geelong Athletics president Matthew Webster was thrilled with the event, which had been in some doubt due to track upgrades that were completed in December.
He lauded the hard work of winter portfolio manager Jackson Lynch and his predecessor Matt Gunther.
“We’ve had some athletes from Canberra, from Albury Wodonga, Bendigo, Ballarat, a couple of athletes from Phillip Island came across too, so mix them in with the local athletes and we had a very good day,” Webster said.
“A great turnout and spectator wise, there was all the connections to the particular athletes that were there plus quite a few onlookers that came in, because it is a public venue down there at the Landy Field.
“With limited advertising and support, we’ve done pretty well.”
