Matthew Lloyd experienced the exhilaration of an AFL premiership during a decorated football career with Essendon.
Now he’s setting his sights on a cricket flag with his local club Bentleigh ANA.
Lloyd, 44, captured 4-17 off eight overs on Saturday as the undefeated ANA scored a resounding eight-wicket win over Hampton United in the South East Cricket Association’s Woolnough Shield.
The right-arm medium pacer struck four times in a row, including the scalp of Hampton United gun Nick Freeman for 90, denying the opener successive centuries, as the visitors were kept to 9-160.
In reply, Bentleigh ANA rushed to 2-162 off 26.2 overs, with Luke Domaschenz (53no, with 6 fours) and AK Tyrone (54no off 36 balls, with 8 fours and 1 six) batting beautifully.
Bentleigh ANA sits 13 points clear on top of the ladder.
BOBBY DAZZLES FOR SHARKS
Former Test batsman Rob Quiney made a triumphant return to his junior club Washington Park, cracking 84 not out as the Sharks chased down Cluden’s 9-178 with eight wickets and nine overs to spare at Packer Park.
A decade after making his Test debut for Australia, Quiney blazed 11 fours and a six and shared a 72-run partnership with Chris Williamson (45).
SO CLOSE FOR CLEAVER
Chelsea Heights-Aspendale Gardens opener Tom Cleaver fell agonisingly short of a century, caught for 97 off 90 balls against Le Page Park in Longmuir Shield.
Cleaver put away 6 fours and 3 sixes to set up CHAG’s second successive victory while taking his season run tally to 319, at 34.14.
MACHIN HITS HIS STRAPS
In Quiney Shield, Washington Park opener David Machin blitzed 11 boundaries on his way to 81 in the Sharks’ impressive win over Le Page Park.
Machin has bounced back from a shaky start to the season in which he took three dips in the duck pond.
IVAN THE RUN MACHINE
Omega stalwart Ivan Delac notched his 28th half century for the club to set up a rousing win over Mackie in Woolnough Shield.
Delac made 75 from 96 balls at the top of the list to help Omega to 6-215.
Mackie in reply made 7-201, with openers Matt Withers (67) and Brad Trotter (52) scoring half centuries.
On a three-game winning streak, Omega has climbed to third spot.
KOOKABURRAS WIN AGAIN
Kingston Heath continued its march to the Longmuir Shield finals with a six-wicket win over West Bentleigh at Southern Rd Reserve.
Mark Fountain (3-24), Jack Wheeler (3-31) and Harrison Murie (2-13) combined to dismiss West Bentleigh for 153 before keeper-batsman Shanaka Perumpuli (60no), Matt Cefala (33) and skipper Andrew Birt (25) steered the Kookaburras home with 10 overs to spare.
The win was achieved in front of a big crowd enjoying Pink Stumps Day.
Kingston Heath has won five games this season to sit in third spot.
