Ross Suri runs through Williamstown as Kew bounces back in style

It was the Ross Suri Show at Victoria Park on Saturday as the Kew quick snared seven wickets to inspire a dominant bounce-back performance.

All out 97 last week in an eight-wicket loss, Kew took out its anger on Williamstown on Saturday.

Paceman Ross Suri stole the show with a destructive seven-wicket haul as the Blues skittled their VSDCA North-West rivals for just 63 at Victoria Park.

A career-best 7-22 from nine overs set up Kew’s nine-wicket triumph.

After losing opener Jack Stewart first ball of the innings, coach Seb Contos (34 not out) and Jack Carroll (23 not out) chased down the winning runs in 15.4 overs.

After winning the toss and bowling, Suri ran rampant, removing seven of the first eight Williamstown bats.

With the ball moving considerably, six of his scalps came either bowled or leg before, just one catch was required.

Contos said it was a standout performance for a player establishing himself in the First XI.

“It was a great day, it was great to see Ross get a lot of reward for a lot of great work,” Contos said.

“Ross is a terrific guy to have around the club, he’s been one of our longest serving players and he’s having a breakout season in a lot of ways.

“He’s been a star since the first game, he was seaming the ball around and putting it in good areas.”

On a difficult day for Williamstown, James Cook (20) and captain Sean Sturrock (16) were the only bats to reach double figures before falling to Will McGlaughlin (2-8).

Fraser Hay struck with the first ball of the chase, removing Jack Stewart, but Kew quickly steadied.

Contos said the likes of Stewart and Carroll had been pivotal all season to Kew’s strong form.

“Jack Carroll really set up the run chase nicely to finish, which was good to see,” he said.

“Jack opened in the T20 against Brunswick on Tuesday and was hitting them beautifully, he’s a pretty versatile player, so he gives us another option in white-ball cricket.

“Jack Stewart has had a really good year, he’s another guys that’s really stepped up and played his role beautifully.”

Kew proved too good for Williamstown in the Second XI as well, also winning by nine wickets.

The Seagulls were all out 90 as Sam Bell took 4-18 before Jordan Dickson (40 not out) and Ed Foreman (30 not out) got the job done with the bat.

In the Thirds, Kew posted 7-215 to defeat Preston by 19 runs and in the Fourths, won a thriller by five runs, defending 137.

“We learnt a few things from last week, so it was good to bounce back,” Contos said.

CSB: IS THIS THE BEST LOCAL PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON?

“It’s been a pretty fun season and hopefully we can have a strong finish, I think our best cricket is still ahead of us.

“It was a really good team performance, all the grades got up, so it was a good chance for the boys to celebrate.

“We had good performances across all the grades, Anagha Bhan, Jordan Dickson, Lachie Cunningham, these sorts of players are putting out really good performances.”

Subbies returns to two-day cricket next round with Kew facing Taylors Lakes at Lionheart Reserve.
