THEY might have gone “dormant” in the third quarter, but Rockbank did enough to take down Broadford and all-but book its ticket for finals on Saturday.
The Rams, long-time cellar-dwellers of the Riddell District Football League, won the match at Broadford 16.19 (115) to 10.8 (68), their first win at the venue in history.
The contest was effectively over by the main break, the visitors having established a 67-point lead after holding the Kangaroos to just 1.2 (8) for the half.
And while they took the foot right off the pedal to let Broadford kick seven third-quarter goals and get back within striking distance, the Rams once again got on top in the final term to run away with the game.
“The guys just went dormant in that third quarter which was a bit disappointing,” Rockbank coach Robbie Lynch said.
“Like with most bottom sides, if you give them a sniff early in the second half they take advantage of it but the guys regained control of the game and ended up getting the four points. It was the first time we’ve ever won there as well, so it was another stepping stone for us which was good.”
Heading into the final two rounds of the season, the result leaves the Rams two games and percentage clear inside the top-six, finals just about assured.
A win against reigning premier Riddell this weekend would 100 per cent lock them in and while few tipsters will be tipping the Rams, Lynch said he gave his side a very good chance of pulling off a major upset on the verge of finals.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if we knock them off,” he said.
“I’ve been watching them all year and they’re known to struggle against us. It should be a good match-up. But it will be a good test for my guys.”
In other results on Saturday, Callum Wilson booted six goals as Diggers Rest thumped Lancefield by 101 points, Rupertswood recorded its first ever win over Riddell by 24 points and Macedon had a 32-point triumph over Kilmore.
