Medium-pacer Joseph Conlin defied logic with an incredible haul of 5-0 for Northcote’s Fourth XI against Melbourne University on Saturday.
Predominantly recognised as a batsman, the emerging talent was thrown the ball after the Students recovered from 4-7 to be 4-58 in their Round 14 fixture.

Conlin claimed the key breakthrough of No. 4 Hugo Bienvenu (22), the start of an incredible 14-ball spell which included two maidens and five wickets.
“I didn’t believe it,” Dragons First XI skipper Blayde Baker said.
Conlin skittled Melbourne Uni captain Laban Ditchburn (0), removed Krishna Chandak (0) caught and bowled, bowled Jonathan Anderson (0) first ball and had Rukmin Rathnasinghe (0) caught behind by wicketkeeper William Brennan.
Melbourne Uni was routed for 62 after 27.2 overs as Conlin finished with unblemished figures during his maiden Premier five-wicket haul.
“Joey is a young opening bat who has played in the threes and fours and is a good cricketer,” Baker said.
“He’s a batsman who bowls. He was thrown the ball yesterday and he has just cleaned them up.”
Conlin is sure to be the talk of training at Bill Lawry Oval this week after destroying Melbourne Uni’s lower-order.
“The boys will be right around him,” Baker said.
Conlin has spent the past two seasons with Northcote, crossing from VSDCA club Preston.
He played junior cricket with Pascoe Vale Hadfield and Gladstone Park before moving to Preston City Oval.
Northcote was 5-167 at stumps on Saturday and will resume with a 105-run lead on day two.
