The appointment was made via Zoom.
And Kingston Hawthorn president Brett Sebire believes the club’s new senior coach Colin Siller will bring “a whole new dimension” to the Hawks.
“We’re known for picking someone out of a different bucket,” Sebire said.
Siller, a Scotsman, played cricket for Hawthorn in the late 1980s before venturing on a coaching career that’s taken in over 30 years of experience around the world.
He’s coached at most levels, including school, youth, club, first-class and ICC Associate.
Siller was also an assistant coach of Canada and national coach for four countries (Fiji, Austria, Sweden and Rwanda).
Sebire said Siller contacted the Hawks to apply for the position.
“He sent us an email,’’ Sebire said.
“He heard that Pete Marshall had pulled the pin and was interested in coming back to Australia and coach at Premier level.’’
Sebire said Kingston Hawthorn spoke to eight or nine coaching candidates over the past few months.
He said Siller’s “wealth of experience” won out.
“He is well connected, most of my contacts in the UK know of him, they say he’s a ripping fella,’’ he said.
“I just think it brings a whole new dimension.
“There’s a distinct shortage of cricket coaches, particularly at Premier level, and we spoke to eight or nine (candidates), some of them are current players, some have just retired.
“Look, they would have been great and we offered the job to a couple but once they thought about what’s involved, playing is a whole lot easier than playing and coaching.”
Sebire said he believed Siller was a very personable chap and would fit in well at the Hawks.
He will arrive in early July.
Kingston Hawthorn finished in 17th spot last season, with two wins, one draw and 12 losses.
