MPCA 2020-21: Chris Brittain blasts 88 for Baxter while Rye banks its first win of season

There were dazzling performances in MPCA Round 4 before the rain on Saturday, while the 2019-20 vote count results are in.

Rain spoiled teams’ hopes of a vital win in Round 4 on Saturday.

Almost all games were washed out after rain came through at about 4pm on the peninsula.

Only First XI game had a result, with Rye (6-165cc) beating Skye (9-86) in Sub District.

In Provincial, Red Hill was ready to push for its first win of the season after restricting Mt Eliza to 6-124 off 38.1 overs.

The Hillmen had the Mounties wobbling at 3-42 before Ben Tracy (56), Nick Strickland (14) and Sam Glenn (17no) dug in. Tom Collett (2-24 off 8 overs) was the pick of Red Hill’s bowlers.

Baxter No. 3 Chris Brittain clubbed 88 in his side’s excellent 8-184 off 40 overs against Langwarrin, which was 2-44 in reply.

Brittain hit eight to the boundary and two over it in a typically dominant innings, and shared a 50-run second wicket partnership with Sammy Mullavey (32) and a 69-run stand with Dale Irving (17). Baxter coach Adeel Hussain cracked 22 not out at the end.

Langwarrin teenager Kyle Parrott took his first wicket in First XI.

In reply, Langwarrin opener Jayde Herrick made a blazing start, cracking a six and then a four…and then being bowled by Irving — all in three successive balls.

Baden Powell opener Harry Maxwell and skipper Travis Kellerman steered their side to 8-161 off 40 overs against Sorrento when play was halted.

Maxwell crunched three sixes and five fours in an entertaining hand of 43 off 38 balls, while Kellerman was unbeaten on 51 off 61 balls.

Sorrento’s bowlers shared the wickets between James Rulach (2-22), Leigh Janssen (2-19), Mitch Bench (2-41) and Bobby Wilson (2-48).

In Peninsula, ladder leaders Long Island was in a strong position against Flinders.

The Islanders put up 4-202 off 40, with skipper Tom Boxell peeling off a classy 89 not out, Michael Burke 49 and Brad Bailey 30 not out. Flinders new ball bowler Dwayne Field took 2-18 off 8 overs.

In reply Flinders lost an early wicket to be 1-16 off 8 overs when rain arrived.

A good finished was on the cards in the game between Somerville and Pines. Half centuries by Madu Perera (54) and Justin Allsopp (55) guided Somerville to 5-186 and in reply, Pines rushed to 1-45 off seven overs when play was abandoned.

Seaford Tigers banked their first points of the season after drawing with Heatherhill.

The Tigers put up 8-184, with Brayden Roscoe (44), Dave James (32 off 33), Luke Chevalier (29) and Tim Hayes (21) in the runs. Heatherhill’s Kieran Lenehan bowled beautifully to take 4-29.

In reply, Heatherhill was 3-74 off 17 overs, with Lenehan (28) and Kristian Miller (23) out.

Moorooduc racked up 7-204 off 40 overs against Main Ridge (0-1 off 1 over). Luke Collins bowled well for the Cougars, taking 2-18 off 8 overs, and Oliver McEncroe snared 3-27.

In District, an unbeaten 66 by Jonny Guthrie escorted Delacombe Park to 3-157 off 40 overs against Frankston YCW (1-28). Andy Christides chimed in with 31 not out.

Rosebud made 7-126 off 40 against Hastings, with Liam Collett (23no) and Lyle House (20) doing best. Matthew Shean snared 2-16 off 8 overs for the Blues.

In Sub District, Rye banked its first win of the season after playing smart cricket to beat Skye.

The Demons batted first and put up 6-165, with skipper Jordan Blades (55no), star recruit Ravi Palleguruge (32) and opener Cooper Harris (23) laying the foundations. Connor Wilson smashed two sixes at the end to make 19 not out.

In reply, Skye crashed from 0-15 to 5-32 and was held to 9-86 off 40 overs. Rye’s bowlers were razor sharp, with Harris taking 4-12 off 8 overs, Palleguruge 2-11 and Blades 1-21.

Carrum Downs (6-187cc) looked to be on top against Tootgarook (3-76 off 18.5 overs).

For Carrum Downs, former Noble Park all-rounder Robbie Johnston impressed with 73 not out and early season century maker Gordon Waterfall made 42.

For the Frogs, Travis French (27no) and Shane Long (30 off 25 balls) were in the runs.

Tyabb made 8-178 and Mt Martha was 0-15 when rain sent players off the field.

Earlier, Max McKenzie captured 4-25 off 8 overs for Mt Martha.

The MPCA conducted its vote count for the 2019-20 season last Thursday night.

Baen Powell batsman Rhys Elmi won the Wedgwood Medal as the best player in Provincial, capping an outstanding season that saw him make 615 runs at 55.

SUB DISTRICT: Levi Mcloughlin-Dore (Frankston YCW) 16, Stuart Plunkett (Frankston YCW) 15, Chris Jobling (Boneo) 15.
