Monash University’s women’s team wrapped up a perfect season when it claimed the Cricket Victoria’s Women’s Community Cricket South Division T20 premiership with a thumping grand final win over Brighton District at Frearson Oval on Sunday.

Linda Machin, former Una Paisley medal winner as Premier Cricket’s best and fairest player, slammed an unbeaten century to set up a total of 4-144. In defence of that total, Monash bowled and fielded brilliantly to hold Brighton to 7-116

The win capped a remarkable campaign for Monash, which swept through the regular season with nine wins from nine starts before taking-on the second-placed Brighton District in Sunday’s grand final.

While Monash University club president Stephen Pearson said the team wasn’t quite a United Nations, there was an interesting, and highly successful, mixed of cultures in the line-up.

“There’s quite a few of the girls who’ve been playing two or three years, with some of the older girls,” he said. “We have some Sri Lankan girls, Indian girls and one player has Russian heritage. As a university is such a multicultural environment so is the cricket club.

“The majority of players are students but some of the older players are ex-students, Monash alumni.

“They’ve gone through undefeated, which has surprised them as much as anyone. They are one very happy group at the moment.”

On Sunday, Brighton won the toss and sent Monash to the crease first.

After just one over Monash suffered an early set back when Brighton removed former Hong Kong under-19 player Dom McCusker for a duck. Machin and Sajani Wijekoon then rebuilt the innings and Monash was 1-51 off the first 10 overs.

Machin then exploded, hitting three sixes and 17 fours on her way to an unbeaten 104 of just 64 balls. Wijekoon made a valuable 31 in support.

Monash Uni started brilliantly in the field with the Wijekoon sisters combining to run out Mez Pertzel (2).

Donna Moore (33) and Lauren Cowling (33) batted well to rebuild the Brighton innings but, when Cowling was bowled by McCusker, the game swung in Monash Uni’s favour. Moore and Cassie Bodie tried to accelerate but the Gryphons’ bowling was too tight and the Dragons were held to 116 of their 20 overs.
