Kooyong Classic: Juan Martin Del Potro and CoCo Vandeweghe sign on for January

Some of the world’s top tennis players will again descend on the spiritual home of Australian tennis, the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, for the annual Kooyong Classic this January.

With the tournament now one of the most important events in the lead-up to the Grand Slam of the Asia/Pacific, the Australian Open, Juan Martin Del Potro and CoCo Vandeweghe have signed-on to finetune their games on the Kooyong’s centre court across the three-day tournament.

Tournament director Peter Johnston is confident Argentina’s Del Potro will use the January 8-10 event to elevate his preparation for the Open.

“He is one of the game’s heavyweights given his playing record and massive fan appeal around the world,” he said. “His comeback from injury has progressed to a level where he is happy to commit to the Kooyong Classic and it will be a great opportunity for fans to see him play as a part of his Australian Open preparation.”

American Vandeweghe will look to put together a strong season in 2019 following a trying 2018 that was marred by injury.

Having secured a career-high ranking of No. 9 in January 2018, Vandeweghe rallied late in the season to find great success alongside Ashleigh Barty in doubles competition, taking out a Grand Slam title at the US Open.

She will now be looking to rebuild her singles ranking and the Kooyong Classic will be a key stepping stone in her Australian Open preparation.
