Greenvale Kangaroos’ Josh Trembearth Premier Cricket comeback was rewarded with a maiden century on Saturday.
The opening batsman broke into the Kangaroos’ First XI in 2015-16 but stepped away for several seasons before returning last season in the lower grades.
Under new coach Damian Shanahan he’s played every game at the top level this season and his breakthrough 108 helped set up Greenvale’s critical 19-run win over Frankston Peninsula.
Trembearth’s 288 runs at an average of 32 leads Greenvale and has him 31st overall in Premier Cricket, just behind Carlton’s Evan Gulbis.
Shanahan was proud of his young charge’s maturity in reaching triple figures.
“For young Josh to get the hundred was fantastic for him, fantastic for the club and fantastic for the team,” Shanahan said.
“He’s got a bright future in front of him, really controlled himself through the innings and got rewarded because it wasn’t the easiest pitch to bat on.
“I didn’t know a lot about Josh when I first got to Greenvale but straight away I was impressed with his work ethic at training, his energy and wanting to get better.
“He got a nice 50 against Carlton and needed the self belief in himself to go on and now that he’s got a hundred under his belt will get more.”
Sent in by the Heat at Butler Oval, Trembearth and Nick Dixon (46) saw Greenvale reach 7-199 in its 50 overs.
The Kangaroos bowlers kept the momentum rolling, running through Frankston Peninsula’s top, to have the hosts 5-59 at one stage.
Chris Dew (69) and Mackenzie Gardner (42) rebuilt the Heat innings with a 87-run partnership before Darcy Bell removed Gardner.
Sean McNicholl claimed the key wicket of Dew and shortly after Frankston Peninsula were all out 180.
Jacob Pawlowicz (3-24) and McNicholl (3-25) led the Kangaroos attack, while Bell snared 2-43.
Shanahan was pleased with his attack’s ability to take early wickets and respond to the Heat’s counter-attack.
“Seany and Darcy Bell made a terrific start, Jacob as well is coming along in leaps and bounds as a young spinner,” he said.
“Those boys worked really hard to get Frankston back in the game and we had to get back to dot balls, get scoreboard pressure, to break that partnership and the boys did that, which was really pleasing.
“We might not have the firepower to blast out a couple of wickets but what we can do is have discipline, be strong with our line and paces.
“That was the most pleasing thing … we’ve had counter-attacking partnerships develop and we haven’t been able to break them and keep our foot on the accelerator.”

Greenvale’s second win of the season sees it jump up to 15th on the Premier Cricket ladder with a clash against Casey-South Melbourne at home this Saturday.
After knocking off Kingston Hawthorn and Frankston Peninsula on the road Shanahan joked he would take the team to Geelong before travelling to Greenvale for Saturday’s clash.
“The boys obviously love a road trip, pity we don’t have Casey down there,” he said.
“It’s a great opportunity this week to get back-to-back decent performances and Casey is a very talented team.”
