Golf: Keeley Marx, Rupert Toomey, Harvey Young among Victoria’s best prospects

Victorian golf has several young runs on the rise who one day could become household names. MEET OUR RISING STARS.

The Victorian junior golf ranks are full of prestigious talents.

Could the next Cam Smith or Hannah Green be right here in our home state?

Despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic in the past three years, our next generation of golfers are continuing to up their games as they chase a professional dream.

Golf Australia’s State High Performance Manager Victoria Matt Cutler believes there are several reasons to be excited for golf fans.

“Having not been able to compete through the Covid shutdowns, it’s exciting to see a young crop of Victorian golfers now putting themselves in contention in tournaments nationally and internationally,” Cutler said.

“The win of the Victorian team at the Interstate Teams Matches at Sorrento was anchored by our women’s team, which featured three teenagers so the future looks bright”.

Here is a look at some of our best and bright talent from across the state.

ABEL EDUARD, Kew

Eduard, 18, is set to move into the open ranks having experienced strong success in his junior career despite schooling being high on his priority list. The Kew member showed he has a bright future after recently finishing second on his international debut at the Warren Amateur in Singapore. He is a former winner of the Victorian Junior Open and South Australian Junior Masters. A member of Golf Australia’s High Performance program.

AMELIA HARRIS, Yarra Yarra

At 14, Harris is the youngest member of the High Performance program and has represented Victoria at both junior and open level in 2022. Late last year she won the Victorian Junior Open and followed that up by making the cut at the Vic Open in a tournament which professionals. She represented Australia at the R & A Junior in Scotland earlier this year as well.

KEELEY MARX, The Heritage

Victoria’s number one and current world number 148 recently had her biggest win at the IMG Academy World Junior Championship in the United States. A member of the High Performance program, she moved into the open ranks with podium finishes at the Australian Amateur and Master of the Amateurs in early 2022 after a stellar junior career.

MOLLY MCLEAN, Rosebud Country Club and The National

The 16-year-old has represented Victoria in both the junior and open championships in 2022, having started the year with a win at the South Australian Junior. She’s also produced top 30 finishes against professionals at the Vic Open and IMG World Junior Championship in the US.

RUPERT TOOMEY, Huntingdale

A prodigious talent he has competed strongly in open age events while only a 14 year old. A member of the High Performance program and Victorian Junior team in 2022 he also represented Australia in Scotland at the R & A Junior Open.


HARVEY YOUNG, Royal Melbourne GC and Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club

The Covid pandemic cost the 18-year-old most of his teenage opportunities but that hasn’t stopped him from hitting the ground running since his Australian junior career ended. Young claimed the Victorian Junior Masters late last year and is currently playing events in the US.

He enjoyed a top-10 finish at the International Junior Masters and reached the match play component of the US Junior Championship.
