Dowling Shield: Young guns fire in final pool games

Four centuries highlighted the final pool games of this season’s Dowling Shields. Here are all the top performers from the first stage of the competition.

The semi-finals of this season’s Dowling Shield have been confirmed.

Following the conclusion of the pool games on Sunday, four teams have been locked into the second to last matches to be played on Sunday, February 12.

Fitzroy Doncaster, Kingston Hawthorn and St Kilda won their way through as the respective pool winners with Essendon prevailing as the wildcard winners.

The final round of action produced a series of stunning performances most notably with the bat.

There was none better than Northcote’s Darcy Aitken who posted a sensational 143 runs from 109 balls in his side’s big win over Dandenong.

The opener’s innings included 20 4s and five 6s in a devastating display of batting as Aitken guided Northcote to 9-329 in its 50 overs.

Lincoln Koliba went close to posting a century of his own but was dismissed LBW for 95.

Melbourne University’s Matthew Gome also reached triple figures as his side ended their tournament on a high against Kingston Hawthorn.

Gome hit 116 from 142 deliveries in just his third innings of the tournament after being elevated to the top of the order.

Essendon’s Lucas Cavian put on a show in his unbeaten 115 against Richmond, guiding his side out of early trouble.

Footscray middle order batsman Aayan Nadeem was the other young gun to reach triple figures with 101 against Frankston Peninsula.

The best bowling figures of the final round belonged to Camberwell’s Xavier Wishart who finished with 5-17 in his side’s win against Carlton.

The final game of each pool section will be played on Sunday, January 9 before the semi-finalist are decided.

ROUND 4 REVIEW

The further the Dowling Shield moves along, the greater the quality.

It was a run fest in Thursday’s action as three players reached triple figures with several half-centuries right across the competition.

Camberwell’s Charlie Wood and Dandenong’s Shaun Thomas had the equal highest score of the day after both finishing unbeaten on 105 against Fitzroy-Doncaster and Melbourne University respectively.

Ringwood’s Lachlan Quinn also registered a century in his side’s clash with Greenvale Kangaroos.

Two players finished with six-wicket hauls including Kingston Hawthorn’s Aditya Chowdhary and Frankston Peninsula’s Mikis Vemis.

What an impressive display by some of Victoria’s finest young cricketers in Round 3 of the Dowling Shield.

Despite facing difficult weather conditions, player put on fine performances headlined by Essendon opener Jessraj Badhaan who hit an unbeaten century in his side’s win Casey-South Melbourne.

Badhaan, who regularly plays in the Bombers’ Fourth XI, eclipsed 104 runs from 121 balls.

His performance included a 111-run opening stand with Alex Mowat who reached 52 before he was dismissed.

Casey-South Melbourne opener Max Heffernan was denied a century of his own after hitting 95 runs from 136 balls before he was dismissed by Agamjot Sandhu who finished with 3-44.

Other players to impress with the bat included Prahran’s Senin Seymour who made 91 runs in his side’s victory over Geelong.

Seymour also had an influence with the ball taking 1-8.

Marley McCombe made a half-century for Geelong.

Footscray’s Jett Grundy led all comers with the ball on Tuesday after finishing with 5-45 in his side’s clash with Northcote.

Darcy Aitken top scored for Northcote with 63.

ROUND 2 REVIEW

Round 2 of the Victorian Premier Cricket’s Dowling Shield has produced a series of stunning displays.

Cooper Rojko continued on his brilliant season, falling narrowly short of a century in St Kilda’s 102-run win against Casey-South Melbourne.

Aftercoming to the crease early in the innings, Rojko produced an unbeaten and patient 95 runs from 173 balls to guide the home side to 6-222 from its 50 overs.

Fletcher Batty also impressed with the bat with 53 runs from 42 deliveries in an innings which included five boundaries and a six.

In response, the Saints showed off their impressive bowling stocks with several players picking up a wicket.

Dandenong was able to secure a 52-run win over Frankston Peninsula as Jaskabeer Singh (89 runs) and Lincoln Koliba (86 runs) led the way for their side with a 144-run partnership.

The pair helped guide their side out of some early trouble as they fell to 2-8 and 3-54.

Meanwhile, the best bowling figures of the day belonged to Ringwood’s Dylan Walker who finished with 4-8 in his side’s six-wicket win over Camberwell Magpies.

Billy Box finished with an unbeaten half-century in his side’s run chase.

Connor Montgomery (Richmond), Lachlan Fitzgerald (Melbourne University), Lachlan Gance (Prahran) and Obie Chambers (Carlton) were the other players to finish the day with four-wicket hauls.
