THIS week’s Sunday Spotlight looks at the indifferent form of a reigning Western Region Football League premier, a Doncaster East sharpshooter’s hot form and a VAFA club that knows only one way — winning.
VAFA: Kew set to challenge again
It has been a remarkable three years for Victorian Amateur Football Association club Kew. Back-to-back premierships in Division 3 and Division 2 over the past two years have given the club an appetite for success. Kew has given no indication it won’t achieve three consecutive promotions in 2015, hammering North Old Boys-St Patrick’s by 127 points on Saturday to sit unbeaten at the top of Division 1.
WRFL: Reigning premier Braybrook battling
Braybrook is one game outside the Western Region Football League Division 3 top four after a 43-point loss against Parkside on Saturday. In a battle that pitted the reigning Division 3 and Division 2 premier against each other, the Magpies prevailed on the back of eight goals from Brent Kelly. It was revealed this week Braybrook has changed coaches, with Michael Shepperbottom replaced by Jamie Lane due to family reasons.
EFL: Limbach leads the way for Doncaster East
Dean Limbach booted 12 of Doncaster East’s 19 goals — including five in the last quarter — as the Eastern Football League outfit defeated Bayswater by 39 points yesterday. The haul took Limbach to 50 goals from six matches in 2015, including 22 in the past two weeks. Croydon’s Brendan Weinert is the second-most prolific goalkicker in Division 2 with 33.
EDFL: Burnside Heights on the board
Wins have been few and far between for Burnside Heights since it entered the Essendon District Football League. But the Bears had reason to celebrate on Saturday after overcoming Keilor Park by 19 points to achieve the third win in their senior history. Aaron Szwedyc booted four goals in the Division 2 triumph, while Aysh Read was best afield.
YVMDFL: Kinglake rises up the table
After one win from 16 matches last year, Kinglake officials could have been forgiven if they wanted to forget about football over the summer. But it appears the Yarra Valley Mountain District Division 2 side was determined to engineer a change in fortune. After five matches, Kinglake remains undefeated in 2015 with a percentage of 197.3. The ladder leader beat Powelltown by 57 points on Saturday to continue its rapid rise.
The whisper: One of the remaining unbeaten VAFA clubs could be without two key players due to injury for several weeks.
