He’s played first-class cricket and has just been appointed captain of his club back in the UK.

But Josh Cantrell’s focus is very much on the Cricket Southern Bayside season, in which he is starting to dominate as an overseas player for Bentleigh.

The 24-year-old right-arm off spinner, who played two first-class games for Cambridge MCCU, grabbed 13 wickets to bowl the Demons to an outright victory over St Brigid’s St Louis on Saturday, and in the process tighten Bentleigh’s grip on top spot in Championship division with one round to go.

Cantrell took 6-54 off 18 overs on Saturday to go with his 7-58 in St Brigid’s first innings to finish with match figures of 13-112 and rocket to the top of wickets tally with 31 scalps.

His magical spell sent St Brigid’s St Louis crashing all out for 73 in its second dig. Earlier, Matthew Chasemore cracked 70 not out for Bentleigh.

Cantrell has just been appointed as Suffolk’s new white-ball captain backin the UK.

*It was mate-versus-mate at Banksia Reserve, where Beaumaris star Ian Cockbain faced up to Mordialloc opening bowler Jakob Woinarski. The pair were Langwarrin teammates last season, opening the batting together in the Mornington Peninsula grand final.

Former Big Bash star Cockbain came out on top in Saturday’s duel, making 77 off 161 balls (10 sixes, 1 six) to help the Sharks to a gripping two-wicket win. They reached the 260 target in the 79th over, finishing 8-262, with Grant Wood (33no off 43 balls) playing a vital innings.

Beaumaris was wobbling at 2-36 before Tom Mutton (58 off 126 balls) and Cockbain dug in with a 111-run partnership to take the score to 3-147. Nick Ritchie (41) then joined Cockbain and the run chase gathered momentum. Insaf Iqbal toiled manfully for Mordialloc, taking 3-68 off 24.3 overs, with nine maidens. Woinarski (2-50), Jordan Barden (2-25) and skipper Nick Connellan (1-59) were also in the wickets for the Bloodhounds.

Scott Caulfield brought about South Caulfield’s undoing. The Mentone bowler took 3-24 off nine overs, combining with Akshat Buch (3-42 off 24.5 overs) to help dismiss South Caulfield for 184, well short of the Tigers’ 236. Jowett (46) and Kanishka Alvitigala (46) did best for South, while Buch capped an outstanding game after making 86 in Mentone’s total last week.

In Division 1, Parkdale United leg-spinner Ben Marsh had a day out, capturing 6-52 off 17 overs to rip through Carnegie, which was shot out for 159 in reply to the Pythons’ 209. Skipper Ashish Harsolia did best for Carnegie with 69 at the top.

Murrumbeena openers Cooper Anstee (76) and Arshaan Jasani (60) combined for a century partnership before Xavier Ross (58) joined the run feast as the Beena racked up 3-257 in reply to South Caulfield’s 152.
