Cricket Victoria Youth Premier League: Spirit defeat Breakers in grand final

Star batter Holly Nagpal was player of the match as her Metropolitan West team was crowned the Cricket Victoria YPL champion.

Another excellent innings from the heavy-scoring Holly Nagpal helped lift the Western Spirit to the Cricket Victoria Youth Premier League Under 15 girls title last Friday.

The Spirit defeated the South East Bayside Breakers in the grand final at the Junction Oval.

A delayed start meant each team received 33 overs.

The Spirit were in first and raised 4-169, with captain Nagpal opening and batting through for 73 not out.

It earned her the player-of-the-match award.

Negapl, who is attached to Premier club Essendon Maribyrnong Park, faced 101 deliveries and hit 7 fours.

The innings lifted her run tally in the tournament to 368 at an average of 122.7, highlighted by a century (101no) against the Rockets in the first match.

No 3 Mia Gordon gave strong support with 49 off 60 balls, with eight boundaries.

The Breakers made 7-125 in reply, with three of their top four batters being run out. They included opener Amelie O’Meara, whose 40 came off 69 balls and took in three boundaries.

Dia Shah was next best with 25.

Opening bowler Lou Lou Field took 2-16 off six overs.

The series, a showpiece of the CV pathway, featured four centuries: from Nagpal, Lila Wilkinson’s 103 not out for Country West, Tegan Rule’s 100 not out for Metropolitan Outer East and Grace Moyle’s 104 for Country Northern Rivers.

Wilkinson was second on the run chart with 338 at 84.50.

Samara Dulvin (Metro Inner South East) was third with 287 at 95.67 and Sara Kennedy fourth with 262 at 65.50. Rule came in fifth with 249 at 62.25.

The Spirit’s Ava Spiteri topped the bowling aggregate with 12 wickets at 8.83.

Nagpal and Spiteri are both from Burnside Springs United Cricket Club.
