There’s another Harvey coming through in Victorian cricket.
Jarvis Harvey, a fast bowler from Wonthaggi and the cousin of state squad member Mackenzie, has been named in the Cricket Victoria Under 17 male emerging players program.
The 15-year-old plays for Wonthaggi Workmens Cricket Club, where his father, Craig, has been a stalwart player and a swashbuckling batsman.
Former international Ian Harvey, Craig’s brother, emerged from Workers, as did former Dandenong captain Timothy Hooper and current Panther Jacob Thomas.
Jarvis, a right-arm paceman and left-hand batsman, played some cricket in the lower grades for Dandy last season.
Oliver Peake, the son of former Victorian batsman Clinton, also features in the squads, as does Archie Flynn, the son of Ringwood coach Sean.
Last season as a bottom-ager Peake hit a record number of runs for Plenty Valley in the Sub-District Under 15 John Craig Shield.
A string of players which performed well in the Shield and the Premier Cricket Under 16 competition is in the program.
It begins next month and will provide 61 emerging players from around the state with the opportunity to develop their cricket in a high-performance environment.
Current and former players, skill acquisition experts and Cricket Victoria’s coaching and talent specialists will lead the program.
The sessions will help prepare the Vic Metro and Vic Country squads for the Under 17 national championships in Tasmania in January.
“We’ve got a very exciting group of talented young players coming through at under 17 level,” Cricket Victoria’s manager of the male emerging players program Tom Evans said.
“We’ll use these sessions held in Melbourne and regional areas, together with our trial matches and the early rounds of the season, to select our Victorian squads for the National Championships.
“The coaching and insight into cricket at the professional level will be of great benefit to all members of the Emerging Players Program and we look for to seeing their development throughout the course of the season.”
