Every picnic jockey wants to win the Balnarring Cup.
French-born Marie-Melodie Pomarede is making the task look easy, after completing back-to-back wins in picnic racing’s most sought after prize on Thursday.
She bolted in on Hanmer Springs, prepared by Mornington trainer Mark Stephenson.
“Every jockey wants to win the Balnarring Cup,’’ Pomarede said after her three length win.
Pomarede, 35, had never ridden Hanmer Springs and the mare was her only ride on Cup Day.
She won last year’s Balnarring Cup on See It All in only her second season of riding.
“I was never a jockey in France,’’ Pomarede, who came to Australia nine years ago for six months but stayed, said.
“Here I’m a track work rider.’’
Balnarring Cup Day was also a special day for two other female riders.
Rookie rider Sophie Clayfield is yet to ride a weinner, but she finished second in the Balnarring Cup on Oh Why.
And in the race before the Cup, 24-year-old Jasmine Trenwith rode her first career winner, saluting on Stirrup.
A big, happy crowd had fun throughout the day.
Poeple picnicked, others partied.
And there were smiles aplenty.
