APS cricket: Hugo Hughes blasts off with century for Melbourne Grammar School

Melbourne Grammar had five debutants as it made a dashing start to the APS First XI cricket season on Saturday.

A blazing century by Hugo Hughes ensured a rousing start for Melbourne Grammar School in the APS First XI competition.

Hughes packed 6 sixes and 9 fours into an innings of 112 not out against Brighton Grammar on Saturday.

He faced only 90 deliveries.

Melbourne Grammar, which had the bye in Round 1, ran up 4-270 after a 148-run partnership between Hughes and Oliver Will for the fourth wicket.

Will’s 83 came off 82 balls and included 7 boundaries.

Both players are attached to Premier clubs, with Hughes at St Kilda and Will at Prahran.

In the reply Brighton Grammar was bowled out for 182, No 4 Callum Heath top scoring with 59 off 68 balls.

Nick Sharpin, who is also at St Kilda, captured 3-27 off 7.2 overs for MGS, which had debutants in Charlie Edwards, Will Gilmore, James Roche, Charlie Graham and Jeremy A’Beckett.

Graham, a leggie, is the son of Prahran Premier Cricket assistant coach and former Melbourne spinner Justin Graham.

Oscar Dowling’s hand of 70 set Geelong College on the path to victory over Haileybury College.

It finished at 6-158 in response to 156.

No 3 Dowling and opener Lachie Wardle (43) put on 94.

Spinner Zach Grech picked up 3-23 for Haileybury.

Geelong Grammar School’s Alex Hatzoglou fell one run short of a century in his team’s rout of Wesley College.

Hatzoglou was 99 not out off 122 balls and Oliver Peake was undefeated on 60 off 73 as the visitors dashed to 1-188 in answer to 8-182.

Henry Melville, who cracked a double century for Geelong in Dowling Shield on Australia Day, missed out with 18.

For Wesley, Flynn Evans did best with 49.

Caulfield Grammar School had a tight win over Carey Grammar, reaching 7-149 in reply to 9-148.

Jake Rothnie came through with an important 40 and it went with important contributions from all-rounder Tom Wrigglesworth (25 and 1-22 off 10 overs of leg-spin) and three wickets from Hamish McInerney and Jobe Kennedy.

It was tight in the match between Xavier College and St Kevin’s College too.

Opening bowler Fergus Cattanach claimed 4-34 off nine overs as St Kevin’s finished at 9-187, 10 runs short of its target of 8-197.

Xavier No 3 Nick Honeyman’s 52 off 85 balls was the best innings of the match.
